He wants studs for hello s life to maybe salvage whatever sanity he has left. The nightmares and the things he sees are making him lose touch with reality. Mr. Kurtz is a perfect example of losing touch with reality. He is insane from being in the Heart of Darkness. He is a very intelligent man, a â€Å"universal genius.† He is just no longer civilized. Marlow says, â€Å"and rivets were what really Mr. Kurtz wanted, if he had only known it.† If Mr. Kurtz had the rivets, he would have been able to leave the Heart of Darkness and escape from the savagery and insanity, which had taken over him later in the story. The ivory also causes savagery. Ivory symbolizes the only sanity that is in all the darkness. It causes people to kill animals and people just so they can have a sense of reality, but all it does is make them more savage. â€Å"The only real feeling was a desire to get appointed to a trading post where ivory was to be had.† Marlow has a desire to have some light in the middle of darkness. Is it Okay to Split an Infinitive Can I start a sentence with And

Is it Okay to Split an Infinitive Can I start a sentence with And The following is some basic writing help that answers your questions about when its okay to split an infinitive, whether to start sentences with â€Å"And† or â€Å"But,† and whether it’s okay to use a singular â€Å"they.† Here are the grammar rules and non-rules that tend to be confusing to many writers (and readers): Is it okay to split an infinitive? Yes, it’s okay to occasionally split an infinitive! But if you can be graceful, it’s better not to split it. â€Å"It’s okay to split an infinitive occasionally† would pose a lower risk of annoying your readers than the first sentence above, which, as you may have noticed, contains a split infinitive. Can I start a sentence with And or But? Yes, it’s okay to start sentences with â€Å"And† or â€Å"But.† But don’t overdo it. Is it okay to use they as a pronoun for one person? I used to be adamant that â€Å"they† is not an appropriate reference to a single person! But even I sometimes use it now and allow my clients to use it too. While there are often workarounds for using the singular â€Å"they,† they are often awkward. There’s a Can I use â€Å"this† without a reference? This is not recommended. The question always to ask yourself (or – see #1 – to always ask yourself) is, â€Å"This WHAT?† and tell us what the WHAT is. Rather than say â€Å"This is not recommended,† try â€Å"This construction is not recommended.†Ã‚  Otherwise your readers will not know what â€Å"this† refers to. Shall I go into whether it’s okay to end a sentence with a preposition?  Let’s save that one for another day. Postmodernism and Metanarratives Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Postmodernism and Metanarratives - Essay Example The essay "Postmodernism and Metanarratives" states the postmodernism and discovers our liberation from metanarratives. In the department of American philosophy, postmodernism approach is little accepted to knowledge and truth. A metanarrative is an idea that people think it’s a comprehensive explanation of knowledge or historical experience. It is a global cultural narrative schema that explains and orders experience and knowledge. As used, Meta means â€Å"about â€Å"while a narrative is a story that is built in a fashion that is sequential. A metanarrative is therefore a story that explains a story encompassing other small stories within schemes that are totalizing. This notion, that reality is community oriented, also appeals to very few Christian theologians. Because there is no any universality accepted postmodern philosophy, but there are many, there are few consistent themes that happen to emerge from every mainstream postmodern writer. The many issues surrounding p ostmodernism today leaves us asking ourselves if we have been liberated from metanarratives and if we should be. The main theme of postmodern philosophy is that it denies the objective truth, which is universal. This is well declared in a statement that is so famous, â€Å"incredulity towards metanarrative†. A meatanarrative is a unifying story that tries to tell about the world. People should be skeptical of broad explanations like those ones. The statement, that God so loved the world is treated as nonsensical by postmodernists.
